The apartment is located in front of a park in Aghia Paraskevi, Athens. The proposal for the refurbishment had to consider that aspect and to maximize the views to it, as well as to reinforce the connection between the internal areas and the external terrace.
Extensive glazing keeps the continuity of the inside and outside parts of the apartment. This is getting assisted by the “ribbon”, a construction on the ceiling that runs through the living room, the dining room and continues to the terrace. It works primarily as a light source (providing an indirect light from the cove) and a connecting element of the apartment’s different functions. The use of the “ribbon” eliminated the use of any kind of pendant lights which would be difficult and restrictive, due to the ceiling’s low height.
The use of carefully selected materials has accomplished the request for sophisticated luxury: marble for the floor inside, teak for the deck outside, walnut for the “ribbon” and the solid walnut wood for the dining table, white leather and stainless steel at the Mies chair, fabric for the dining chairs and white marble for the coffee table. For the table and the chairs at the terrace, there have been selected materials that can withstand the weather conditions throughout the year, from snow during winter to temperatures reaching 40 degrees in the summer.
The lack of other elements (paintings, photos, etc.) was one of the primary requirements of the design, leaving the furniture and the materials to define the apartment’s character.
